Any applicants living in rental housing will require the landlord’s permission to have a dog, including weight and breed restrictions.. A copy of the rental agreement showing a minimum of 6 months remaining on the lease is required. A VBF trainer will be inspecting your home and will use this information as part of the application approval process.
You must provide proof of income (from disability payments and/or employment) to ensure you have the financial ability to afford a dog/cat.
It will cost approximately $2000-$3000 to support a dog’s care, feeding and medical expenses each year. This breaks down to about $170 per month (a cat will be approximately half that cost). While you may spend less some months and more other months, this is meant to help you determine if you have the discretionary income in your budget to properly care for a dog/cat.
Please research the name and location of the nearest Emergency Animal Hospital. VBF recommends you consider Pet Health Insurance.
